LIGA on the side of victims of crime

In December 2007, under the auspices of the Minister of Justice Jiří Pospíšil, Liga held a roundtable, entitled; “Legislative protection against secondary victimisation during criminal proceedings, and the right to privacy.” The conference was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Justice and academics, as well as by representatives from a number of NGOs.

Mother suffering from mild mental condition enjoys full legal capacity to take care of her children

The Jicin District Court has, at last, decided on the case of mother whose son was placed into institutional care due to her mild, psychiatric condition. Liga is currently working towards obtaining compensation for damages caused to the woman.

For over a year, The League of Human Rights has been providing medical patients with internet legal counselling; a pioneering legal advice service for patients with grievances within the medical sphere.

Discussion on supported decision-making in Czechia about to start

LIGA and MDAC, along with representatives of other NGOs, are currently preparing a series of roundtables concerning people with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities, and other such groups, in March and April 2008. These meetings are aimed at discussing deficiencies in the current guardianship legislation and aim to introduce and pioneer a new trend – supported decision-making – that should provide the people concerned with adequate legal support, in addition to respecting their personal, and legal, autonomy.

ICC an issue at One World festival

Discussions regarding the International Criminal Court (ICC) are due to be held on 10th and 11th March during the One World International Human Rights documentary festival, which takes place this week in Prague. The League of Human Rights, which together with other organisations and institutions supports the ICC and urges the Czech government to ratify it, is also due to participate in the discussions.

LIGA participated on the World respected childbirth week

On 16 May, as part of the program organized during the World respected childbirth week organized by Hnutí za aktivní mateřství and Unie porodních asistentek took place lecture by the LIGA lawyer David Zahumenský on possibilities of effective protection of parents. LIGA sees the area of child birthing together with the psychiatry as the most conservative and less patient-friendly area of the Czech health care services.

The Ministry solves problems with forensic experts only partly

LIGA has recently called attention to problems in work of medical forensic experts. Now, the Ministry of Justice has prepared an amendment to improve the situation. Instead of completely new law requested also by the Czech Ombudsman.

Roundtable on discrimination in health care

LIGA lawyer David Zahumensky participated on a meeting of different experts on discrimination and health care in London on 17 September 2008. The round table was organized by the Equal Rights Trust and its aim was to exchange experience between participants of Western and Central Europe and USA.

LIGA is training students on patient rights

On Wednesday 15 October 2008 LIGA ran a training for students of the Olomouc Law School on the rights of patients. 14 students of law clinic participated on this 3-hour seminar. The students got known how to advice clients as well as how issues like informed consent, access to health documentation, compulsory vaccination or damage for medical malpractice are regulated.

Conference on Patients Rights in the EU

LIGA’s lawyer participated on the conference taking place in Vilnius, Lithuania on 28-29 November 2008. The event was organized by the European Patients΄ Forum (EPF), umbrella NGO promoting rights of patients and their needs on the EU level and shielding work of national organizations.

NGOs urges Council of Europe to deal with coercive sterilizations

On 19 February 2009 LIGA together with coalition of human rights organizations sent a letter to the Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Thomas Hammemberk to draw his attention to the unresolved issue of the coerced sterilization of Romani women in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

This year’s week of respect for the childbirth opened new subjects

The League of Human Rights took part in the traditional festival about childbirth and parenthood. Some new subjects appeared under the discussion, among the usual. For example, there were discussion about the rights and situation of companions of women in childbed and the limits of the competence of health workers. The interest of parents with this kind of problem has increased considerably.

Prague’s municipality levy charges for information without authorization

Today was delivered the decision of The Interior Ministry to The League of Human Rights, which states the misconduct of the Municipality of the capital city of Prague in handling the requests for information that refers to the number of independently working midwifes.

Another child did not end in a state institution thanks to Liga

The District Court in Jičín has closed the case of Ms D. who suffers from a psychiatric condition. The case was brought in November 2006 and the court acting on the proposal of social services took the precautionary measure of taking away one of her children and placing him in state institution where he stayed for 10 months. Within this period, the court was deciding whether both children should be placed in the state institution or whether the mother was capable of taking proper care of them.

Doctors’ lapses have to be properly investigated

It is a long-term goal of Liga lawyers to deal with serious lapses on the part of medical staff. In cooperation with MDAC, Liga lawyers represent a client who was transported – after an accidental overdose – to a sobering-up station in Brno last year. Although the paramedics who took Mr. L. to the station stated in the transport report that he was calm, the doctors at the station tied Mr. L. onto a bed. The ties Mr. L. had on his ankles, neck and wrists caused him severe burns and injuries. The injuries to his wrists were so serious that Mr. L. had to undergo a two-week rehabilitation. He lodged a complaint against the doctors.
