Victims´ Rights
From our experiences in dealing with, and representing victims of crime in court, we recognise that there is a great necessity to strengthen the protection of the fundamental rights of these individuals. This is more so in the instances of particularly vulnerable victims, such as victims of domestic or sexual violence. These victims are often re-victimised by the insensitive conduct of the crime prevention authorities towards them. The procedural rights of victims are likewise, highly insufficient, as they are not afforded any legal protection, in the form of a representative, in court.
Liga aims to improve victims’ access to free legal aid, in order to ensure that they provided with legal representation and hence, to ensure their actual participation in criminal proceedings, without fear or intimidation. We want victims of crime to have a genuine chance to be heard during the criminal proceedings, in order to be better satisfied with the outcome of the case, as well as to have a greater opportunity to access the financial help of the government.
