Criminal Justice
Due to our involvement in the Civil Legal Observers Project, 200-2002, Liga is renowned for being an organisation which strongly advocates for the establishment of an independent monitoring body to review all police crimes. We believe it is critical to set up such a mechanism, to monitor and hence to reduce, occurrences of police misconduct.
As important as it is to monitor police actions, we find also a great need to monitor the work of state prosecutors. From our vast experience, we aware of a big gap in the law, where there is a lack of effective remedy available for victims when the state prosecutors decide not to prosecute. We therefore consider it imperative, to strengthen victims’ procedural rights, and hence to improve the protection given to the victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Liga is highly sympathetic to the plights of victims of crime, and is a firm proponent of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Regrettably, the Czech Republic remains the only EU Member State which has yet to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Consquently, Liga became, in 2002, the first Czech member of the global Coalition for the International Criminal Court; the CICC , which advocates for the ratification and promotion of an impartial, effective and independent International Criminal Court. Within the Czech Republic, Liga is at the vanguard, and coordinates the activities of an informal alliance of Czech organisations, who all support ratification of the ICC.
