Human Rights in Health Care
Whilst representing victims of forced sterilisation, we learnt how poor the general legal knowledge of human rights in the medical care sector actually was. The knowledge of human rights and obligations in the medical sphere, introduced by the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine and other legal instruments, was lacking not only for patients, but was also highly inadequate among doctors and other health care professionals, who frequently asked questions concerning the correct interpretation of the Convention provisions. Hence, due to this pressing need, Liga initiated a comprehensive project to promote human rights in the health care sphere. We presently cooperate with several hospitals, in order to improve their standards of patient care. We also provide an online patient consultation service, where patients are able to voice their concerns and legal questions to be addressed and answered by out legal experts.
Liga also focuses on the issue of mentally disabled people and the violations of their rights. In collaboration with the European-wide NGO, the Mental Disability Advocacy Centre (MDAC), we provide legal counselling and advice to victims in this area. In the more strategic cases, we also represent clients at court.
